Kickin' tail feathers in this thing called life!

Yea! We have the vanity installed and the bathroom already looks 100 times better! We still need to put up the mirror and get the new outlet installed. My hubby started on the outlet today by drilling a hole through the drywall. And he drilled. And he drilled. And he…. you get the picture. There were FIVE layers of drywall, which made for a 2 1/2 inch thick wall in the bathroom. I have no idea why Otis felt the need to have such thick walls…
I am sitting here watching the clock and waiting for noon. I have to let my hubby get some sleep because I need him this afternoon.
We’re redoing the bathroom!
I woke up this morning only to hear my son whimpering in his bedroom. Before too long my husband came into the bedroom and asked me to help remove a splinter from my son’s big toe. I found the Boy curled up on a chair hugging his foot to his chest.
“Not the sharp thing Mom, please not the sharp thing!”
I agreed to save the needle as a last resort. The splinter was on the pad of his big toe and it was really shoved in deep. If I got any where near it the Boy would scream and jerk his foot and generally act like I was electrocuting him. He gets points for at least letting me try to get the splinter out. Even if it was like trying to get a hook out of a lively fish.
He couldn’t walk on it and I couldn’t get it out. The only option at that point was to take him to the doctor’s office. I called in only to find out there was only one doctor on duty and the schedule was full. Off to the urgent care! I stayed home with the sleeping Beans while my hubby took the Boy.
I wish now that I would’ve gone instead because I would’ve thought to take pictures of what happened. Sorry internet, you’ll just have to use your imagination.
They lucked out and there was no one in the waiting room. They were quickly escorted to a room where the doctor got to work removing the splinter. I had thought that they would numb his toe but my hubby said that they didn’t do that.
“What?? They didn’t numb it first? Did you have to hold him down?”
“No, the Boy was too busy staring at the doctor and playing it cool.”
Yeah, my six year old son got a hot, young doctor. He leaned back, put his arms behind his head and just stared at her while calmly saying “Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.” And she had to really dig to get it out too.
Ah, the power of beauty…
Yesterday was a day of two firsts for me. And they both ended happily.
We have a rogue burner on our stove. Personally, I think the stove has been feeling a little resentful since we got the microwave.
Ever notice how easy it is to justify something you’re doing? “This really isn’t in my budget but it’s on sale right now.” or “I had a long day today. I’ll work out tomorrow.” or “I’m a good christian, I don’t need to go to church.”
I fell into that last lie for a long time. I mean, c’mon, I worked in children’s ministry for most of my life. I’d done missions trips. I went to a christian high school. So what if I don’t go to church on Sundays for awhile?!
During that same time I had this friend that was praying for me. (thanks friend) She was constantly inviting me to come check out this new church. Finally we did. And it became our church family. It was at that church that we really experienced connection and community. We learned what it meant to really be part of a church family.
Today, thousands of miles away, we’re at a new church, working to settle in and begin to form new friendships. This morning our Pastor was going over Acts 2 and the importance of connection and community. It made me think of members of my family that don’t go to church. They’re good people. They believe in God. They don’t need church. Oh but they don’t know. They don’t know what they are missing. They don’t know who’s missing them. They don’t know how much more God wants to bless them.
I’m following my friend’s lead… I’m praying for them. And you can bet I’ll be inviting them to come check out this church – even from across the country.
Today I had a date with my youngest daughter, Beans. We had lunch, did some shopping and finished out our date with the new Veggie Tales “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything” movie.
I have loved Veggie Tales from the first time I saw them. They promote good values and they have my kinda humor! This movie was no exception. I love that they can make a movie that entertains kids while providing good clean humor for the adults. (nothing beats a bunch of veggies impersonating the B-52’s!) I don’t want to ruin the movie for anyone who is planning on seeing it. I will say this though…. I love the cheese curls!!
(and go check out Veggie Rocks!)
“Mama, can you fix my boing boing?”
“You mean your slinky?”
“No. It’s my boing boing, … my boing boing, … my boing boing.”
(for a minute there i thought i was in preschool rap video)
Growing up in the desert taught me how to prepare myself for the long hot summers. You learned to wear as little as possible – if you could run around in your bathing suit, all the better. You kept the curtains drawn against the heat, kept the fans circulating and never, ever turned on the oven. Errands were planned for early morning or after sundown. The only excuse to go outside was to jump into the pool! And of course you bought sunscreen by the gallon.
Now we’re on the east coast and that training only works for about three months. Then it’s a whole new ballgame. When the leaves began to change colors and the temp dropped enough to warrant pants it was exciting and pretty. I loved being outside! When the leaves began to fall off of the trees and the temp dropped enough that the sweaters came out it was invigorating and felt like Christmas was on its way. When the squirrels began wearing fur coats, the white stuff covered the ground and people outside resembled the abominal snowman… that’s when I truly understood and forgave the snowbirds!!
